A marching band descends a flight of steps to perform at the Grand Opening Ceremony for the Red Line’s first segment in downtown Los Angeles.

Today marks the 20th Anniversary of the Red Line’s Grand Opening. The subway system opened in three segments, the first of which was on January 29, 1993. This first segment connected Union Station in Downtown Los Angeles to Westlake/MacArthur Park at Wilshire and Alvarado, acting as the foundation for a system that would eventually reach North Hollywood in the year 2000. The Red Line now consists of 14 stations spanning over 16 miles. These images depict the planning and construction of the Red Line’s first segment. Videos documenting the Red Line’s first Grand Opening can be found on the Metro Library and Archive’s YouTube Channel.
